Venezuelan voters oppose Chavez's proposed constitutional changes, poll shows

Voters are balking at President Hugo Chavez's proposed changes to the constitution ahead of a referendum next weekend, according to a new poll that shows the Venezuelan leader facing his toughest electoral challenge in years.

The survey, published Saturday in the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal, found about 49 percent of likely voters oppose Chavez's reforms, well ahead of the 39 percent who favor the changes. The poll was conducted by the Caracas polling firm Datanalisis, which has consistently predicted Chavez's victories in past elections.
