Fed: Govt sexed up Iraq intelligence to build case for war

An inquiry has been told the federal government sexed up intelligence on Iraq to deliberatelymislead Australians and build the case for war.

The claim has come from ANDREW WILKIE, a former intelligence analyst with the Officeof National Assessments.

He has launched a blistering assault on the government's credibility and its use ofintelligence before the Iraq war.

Mr WILKIE, who quit ONA in March, says the government fabricated the truth to keepin step with its American allies.

Giving evidence to a parliamentary inquiry, he said Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD andForeign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER were the chief cheerleaders of the invasion campaign.

Mr HOWARD has denied the charge and challenged Mr WILKIE to back his claim up with evidence.
