Fed: Strategy to boost nation's tourism, says Hockey

The federal government has announced a long-term strategy for Australia's tourism industry, aimed at minimising the impact of collapses such as Ansett.

Tourism Minister JOE HOCKEY has told reporters the tourism industry is crying out fora long-term plan.

Mr HOCKEY says the tourism industry can't be held to ransom by individual company collapseslike that of Ansett.

Asked about Ansett's uncertain future, Mr HOCKEY said the tourism industry is morerobust than the collapse of one company and should be able to grow regardless of changesin aviation.

The strategy, which will also involve Transport and Regional Services Minister JOHNANDERSON and Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK, will be put to Cabinet at the end ofthe year.

It will cover a range of issues including access to international markets, passengerprocessing, investment in tourism infrastructure and transport standards.
