Deportivo goalkeeper given 6-month suspended jail sentence for assaulting deputy

Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Gustavo Munua received a six-month suspended prison sentence Wednesday for assaulting the No. 2 shot stopper at the Spanish club.

Munua was found guilty of attacking Israel goalkeeper Dudu Aouate in the Deportivo locker room on Jan. 11, but was fined euro3,600 (US$5,235) and had his jail term suspended as it was his first offense.

Aouate needed eight stitches around his left eye after being punched by Munua one day after telling reporters he didn't know why the Uruguayan had taken his position as the No. 1 goalkeeper at the club.

Both players were initially dropped by coach Miguel Angel Lotina on Jan. 12 before being allowed to return to the team. They continue to train separately from each other and the rest of the squad.

Deportivo is 19th in the league with 17 points, five behind the lowest-ranked team not in the relegation zone.
