NSW: Carr says Vic poll no pointer to NSW election
SYDNEY, Dec 1 AAP - Labor's landslide victory in the Victorian poll was no pointerto the upcoming NSW election, Premier Bob Carr said today.
The ALP yesterday won its greatest ever victory in Victoria with Premier Steve Bracksleading the party to a crushing defeat of the Liberals.
Labor will now govern with a large outright majority, after securing at least 60 seatsin the 88-seat parliament with an eight per cent swing across the state.
Mr Carr said the result pointed to a vote in favour of good government and he congratulatedhis Victorian counterpart.
But the NSW poll - in March next year - would be a tougher battle, Mr Carr said.
"It's not a pointer to a NSW result," he told reporters.
"The election here will be much tighter, much closer.
"We're going to have to work very, very hard.
"It's an election that we may lose."
Mr Carr denied he was drawing comfort today from the victory, but polls put him milesahead of opposition leader John Brogden, who has been besieged by the "cash-for-questions"
affair.
The government tried to make political gains in the final week of parliament this year, accusing Mr Brogden of being paid by PricewaterhouseCoopers to ask questions while oppositionplanning spokesman.
Mr Carr said the Victorian result proved good government prevailed over political tacticsand strategy.
"That more than any political strategy is what's going to be relevant to the next stateelection," he said.
