Fed: Law Conference hears Australian proposals for Iraq

A conference of international lawyers' has heard that Iraq could benefit from an Australiansystem of government -- but not from an American version of justice.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has told the Commonwealth Law Conference in Melbourne thatAustralia's federal system of government could be just the thing for a reconstituted Iraq.

Mr HOWARD says some basic similarities exist between the two countries that lend themselvesto the establishment of an Australian style of regional governments operating under afederal umbrella.

The conference has also heard from internationally-renowned lawyer GEOFFREY ROBERTSON, QC.

He says the hearing of war crimes cases in Iraq by a special military commission --as demanded by the United States -- would fail to serve the cause of justice.

The opening session has also heard from CHERIE BOOTH, QC, a noted human rights lawyerand the wife of British Prime Minister TONY BLAIR.
