Farrakhan son shot over debt, police say

Chicago police were seeking aggravated battery charges against twopeople Friday in the shooting of Nation of Islam leader LouisFarrakhan's son, who was attacked during a quarrel over a debt,police said.

Police said they also were seeking an arrest warrant for a thirdsuspect in the early Thursday attack on Joshua Farrakhan at a home inthe South Side's Roseland neighborhood.

He and a woman were visiting a friend when assailants beat andshot Joshua Farrakhan in both legs in the 9900 block of South Forest,police said.

The shooting erupted during a quarrel over a debt, police said.They would not elaborate.

The woman suffered minor injuries, police said. They would notidentify her because she is a witness.

Police said they were waiting Friday for the Cook County state'sattorney's felony review unit to approve charges.

The Nation of Islam has announced that it will conduct anindependent investigation of the shooting.

Aides to Louis Farrakhan have described Joshua Farrakhan, 42, asbeing close to his father and staying at his side when the leaderfell ill from prostate cancer in 1999. He has worked in his father'sorganization, including the publishing company that puts out theNation of Islam newspaper, Final Call, aides said.

Joshua Farrakhan was treated at Christ Hospital and Medical Centerin Oak Lawn.

Hospital officials Friday refused to comment on his condition atthe family's request.
